Tuesday Morning

Tuesday Morning

Here are a few snapshots taken on my rounds this morning.  I thought these would be nice for a certain chap who’s been away working and might be missing home right about now.             Travel safe my love, we all miss you. P.S. The pigs say you owe them back rubs.

Emerald Isle

Emerald Isle

On my morning walk about today I noticed two defining factors, everything is dripping wet and turning green.  Wherever I look there seems to be a carpet of emerald, bowed down by diamond jewels of moisture.  Today the air was heavy with humidity, the crisp breezes of April have died away (though the showers seem to be hanging around) while May is beginning to ripen into a lush carpet of soft grass and warm air. As I squelched through the…

Evening Walk

Evening Walk

The ‘summer’ weather we’ve been experiencing this week has been simply stunning.  The sunshine, the warmth, that uplifted feeling you get when the days seem to last forever and the possibilities are endless.  Last night Stephen came home early (6pm!) which meant time for a family dinner and an evening walk.  Despite the soggy ground (apparently it is actually still spring!) it was sheer bliss. The sheer luxury of walking our own land, free as you like, will never wear…

Outward Bound

Outward Bound

Today we ventured out with friends to a favourite nature trail, the wind was enough to pinch our cheeks but the sun paid for all.  We basked for a good couple of hours, even eating our lunch at a picnic bench outside.  In February!  At this time of year it can easily be -40C so to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine felt like a holiday. Whenever we visit this place I’m always amazed at how much we pack in…

New World

New World

Friday was a pretty uninspiring day, despite the fact that Huwyl was on the mend the weather was a lovely combination of ice rain and snow.  Yum.  For anyone unfamiliar with the joys of ice rain it is rain that turns to ice on contact, making the world your skating rink.  Getting out to the chickens in the morning had a life-in-peril feeling as I slid around trying not to fall and break something on the concrete hard yet utterly…

Contemplation

Contemplation

I find myself thinking a lot recently, looking inwards, retreating a little.  Perhaps it is the January urge to hibernate, to be tucked away in a little nook until spring comes calling.  My lack of energy is a bit seasonal and mostly health, the tiredness is part of this problem I’ve been fighting for what seems like a long time.  It’s tempting to ‘give in’, to slip into sleep and put the world on pause.  But. That isn’t how…

Sights of Sunday

Sights of Sunday

The wind is biting this morning, the air frigid, but it’s worth getting outside to watch the dogs flying happily along as we walk the trails Stephen made around the fields.  The sunlight is hazy but the snow still shines, glittering pinpoints in the icy crust that covers everything now.   The dogs crunch through the crust, sending shards flying with their crashing paws, the sound of broken glass is everywhere as ice hits ice.  I think about the warm…

Good Thoughts

Good Thoughts

This week has been a very different kettle of fish to last week, of course we have our usual ups and downs but this week has flowed much more, a little more rhythm has been achieved.  So here are some of the many things I’m grateful for this week. – This place I live in, that astounds me every day. – The chance to watch the moon rise, tinted by the just setting sun. – A cosy fire to sit…

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Baby It’s Cold Outside

I can always tell when the temperature is below -20C; the air freezes around my nose as I breathe in.  Today is sunny and clear so I should have realised that it would be a tad parky, but it wasn’t until I was outside checking on the chickens that I realised how much the temperature had plunged overnight.  But once we were all suited and booted and outside on this glorious sunny day we couldn’t help but head off on…

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve

This morning the house was cold, really cold, it made me want to stay in bed and pull the duvet up over my head until at least an hour after dawn, but the boys had other ideas.   I made them breakfast and then, rather grumpily, bundled up to go outside and collect wood from the far garage as we’d run through our inside supply last night. The crisp air, the crunching snow and the tingle on my skin soon…
